Youth Volunteer (14-16)
Anyone over the age of 14 can apply to volunteer as a Youth Volunteer with the Scottish SPCA.
Why we want you
Anyone over the age of 14 can apply to volunteer to be a Youth Volunteer at the Scottish SPCA. We can offer you a placement for one full day or half day per week up to a maximum of 8 weeks, subject to availability.
Priority will be given to young people who require to undertake a volunteering placement for an awards scheme, such as the Duke of Edinburgh or Saltire Awards, or who require volunteering experience for applying to college or university. We will also consider young people who are considering a career in animal welfare in the future and are looking for animal husbandry experience.
IMPORTANT NOTE: While we appreciate that the criteria for the volunteering section of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards is connected to a specific number of months (Bronze 3 months, Silver 6 months and Gold 12 months) in order that you can demonstrate commitment over a set time period, the Scottish SPCA are unable to offer the suggested average time commitment of 1-2 hour per week for operational reasons.
How much time do you need to be able to give?
You may use your 8 weeks of volunteering with us (half or full days) towards your DofE volunteering requirement, and will gain during those 8 weeks between 32 and 56 hours of volunteering experience. Please discuss with your DofE leader how you may find additional volunteering opportunity to supplement this 8 week period to satisfy the needs of the scheme.
What will you be doing?
- You will undertake basic animal husbandry tasks with a variety of species at the centre
- You will also undertake basic cleaning and laundry tasks as part of your role
- You will have full supervision from a member of our team at all times

- Able to follow instructions well
- Flexible in approach to tasks undertaken
