From abandoned wildlife to abused pets, we see it all

Every day we’re alerted to animals who need our help. Trapped, neglected or even abandoned at the edge of a canal, we show up for Scotland’s animals when no one else does. We’ve encountered some extraordinary cases and have many stories to tell. Unfortunately, they don’t all have a happy ending.

A birth that beat the odds

Bruno the hare’s life began with an extraordinary birth. His mother was found passed away in a field after a tragic accident. The farmer who found her noticed movement in her stomach and made a split-second decision to perform an emergency C-section with a pen knife from his pocket.*

Two baby hares were delivered, but sadly only one survived. Bruno was rushed to us, weighing 20g less than he should’ve. After an initial examination, one of our amazing team hand-reared him at home to minimise the stress on his fragile body.

Bruno progressed leaps and bounds during his time with us and when it was ready to release him, we couldn’t help but have tears in our eyes. From a tiny, defenceless baby still in the womb, to a thriving, fully grown hare ready to take on the wild, Bruno really did beat the odds.

*The Scottish SPCA do not recommend that anyone perform surgery on wild animals.

The sole survivor

Olive was found in horrific conditions, neglected by the person who was supposed to love her unconditionally. She was one of eight dogs abandoned in a filthy room, malnourished and in need of urgent care. Out of all the dogs we found, she was the only one to survive.

Nervous and dangerously underweight, our team nursed Olive back to health, showering her with the love and affection she’d never received before. Olive had endured abuse and neglect, but our dedicated team rebuilt her confidence and helped her trust again.

Olive is now the happy, healthy dog we knew she could be. She loves cuddles and playing but there’s still something missing – her forever home. Please donate today to give dogs like Olive food, toys, walks and the chance to find the home they deserve.

The story of an orphaned seal pup

We found Niffler the day he was born, premature and all alone. We weren’t sure if he would make it, but we were determined to rescue him and give him a normal life.

We cared for Niffler, caring by his side for all his firsts. We fed him, helping him grow big and strong, and taught him how to swim. We then introduced him to another seal pup who he loved swimming and playing with. As both pups grew together, we moved them outdoors into a bigger pool and watched them make new seal friends.

Thanks to your donations, our team’s determined efforts and exceptional care, Niffler is now thriving in his natural habitat. Niffler was released with his buddy to start a new adventure in the wild. He’s grown into a strong-minded, loveable seal. We could never have imagined how well he’d be doing after we found him on that beach. Your donations matter.

A helpless start with a happy ending

Trapped, cowering and afraid – that’s how we found poor Sadie. At 6 months old she had never been outside, never known the comfort of blankets or a bed, and had never played with a toy. When we rescued her, we didn’t know if this neglect would leave her traumatised for life.

But Sadie proved everyone wrong. She was affectionate, trusting and bright. While she recovered in our care, we made sure she had countless cuddles and toys until she was ready to find her forever home. Vicky and Ed came along and immediately fell in love with her. She’s now living the live she deserves with them, and we couldn’t be happier.

We can’t rescue without donations

As Scotland’s only all-animal emergency service, we’re here 365 days a year when animals desperately look to us in their time of need. Stories like Skye’s unfortunately happen more often that you’d think.

For every happy ending, the next story is only beginning…
