Scottish SPCA issues appeal after rabbit found abandoned in cardboard box

The female lop-eared rabbit was found to be in “extremely poor” body condition.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a rabbit was found abandoned in a field behind the Newbattle Medical Practice in the Mayfield area of Dalkeith. This field is a popular dog walking location.

The white, female lop-eared rabbit, affectionately named Bluebell by staff, was discovered by a member of the public on Sunday February 1. They called the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline.

Left with nothing more than a cardboard box

An Inspector arrived at the scene and found that the rabbit was left with nothing more than a cardboard box. The box was dry which would indicate the rabbit was found soon after being abandoned. The Inspector also noted that the rabbit appeared to be in “extremely poor” body condition.

The rabbit was taken to the Scottish SPCA Edinburgh Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno where she is being cared for by staff.
