Scottish SPCA celebrates their volunteers this International Volunteers Day

This International Volunteers Day, the Scottish SPCA is looking back at all the incredible work volunteers have achieved in 2025.

The Scottish SPCA currently has 947 volunteers who provide critical support in achieving theSociety’s mission of making Scotland the best place for an animal to call home.

The collective efforts of Scottish SPCA volunteers from January 2025 to October 2025 equates to a remarkable in-kind contribution of approximately £312,000.

Something for everything

There is an incredible flexibility to volunteering roles at the Society. With over 30 different roles including digital work from home roles, supporting events in local communities, student placements, admin or research roles and many, there’s something for everyone!

The Scottish SPCA also runs an Employability Scheme which supports long term unemployed people with gaining skills and confidence to facilitate a return to employment.

Student Involving Organisation of the Year Award 2025

The Society was honoured to receive the Student Involving Organisation of the Year Award 2025 from Dundee University, a brilliant recognition of the successes from the SSPCA Student Ambassador Programme.

The Society is proud to have reached a brilliant 94% customer satisfaction rate in 2025 which is a wonderful achievement.

They all have one thing in common – an absolute adoration of animals

Recognising our amazing volunteers hard work, Board Chair Fiona MacLeod said: “The Scottish SPCA simply would not be here rescuing and protecting animals and giving them a voice, were it not for our incredible volunteers.

“I have had the privilege of meeting so many of our volunteer team across every aspect of the organisation. They all have one thing in common – an absolute adoration of animals and a great joy in giving their time and very hard work to make their lives better.

“I am a volunteer fosterer of dogs, a volunteer Animal Care Assistant at one of our rescue centres, a volunteer fundraiser – and of course I am volunteer Chair of the Board of the iconic SSPCA together with my volunteer trustees.

Thank you to everyone who gives their time and energy

“Now that’s a lot of uses of the word “volunteer” in one sentence!  I can honestly say that each volunteering role gives me greater satisfaction and sense of making a real difference than any of my paid jobs! Thank you to everyone who gives their time and energy to causes you believe in. It’s what turns a place into a community.”

Here’s what some of the wonderful volunteers have to say about their experience working for the Scottish SPCA:

Why volunteer with the Scottish SPCA?

Volunteering is a rewarding way to support animal welfare and our work in Scotland, and we have a range of activities everyone can get involved in. Some are obviously working with the animals in our care, but we also need support in a whole variety of different areas that you may not expect.

  • It’s a chance to try out something new
  • You’ll gain a great sense of achievement
  • You’ll be doing something useful and rewarding
  • You’ll be contributing to the wellbeing of Scotland’s animals
  • You’ll be part of a dedicated and professional team
  • You can develop both skills and confidence

Volunteering is open to anyone aged 16 or over although, for some of our roles, different age restrictions apply, depending upon the skills and experience required. We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. There are many different volunteering roles, you can find out more about this here.
