Missing cat reunited with owners after nine years thanks to microchip

George, a 14-year-old Tabby, has been reunited with his family after being missing for an incredible nine years.

When George arrived at the Scottish SPCA’s Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre last week, colleagues carried out the standard check for a microchip. The scanner picked up a chip registered to an owner and, to everyone’s amazement, the record showed George had been reported missing back in 2016.

The registration details were still up to date, allowing the team to get in touch with his owners. After years of believing George had passed away, they were stunned to receive the call and came straight to the centre the next day to collect him. George is now settling back home with his family, a new feline companion and a young human brother.

They came to collect him from the Glasgow ARRC the next day and George was finally reunited with his family after nine long years. He now has a new feline sibling and a human brother.

George’s story underlines just how important microchipping is and why it’s vital to keep contact details current.

The Scottish SPCA is calling for compulsory cat microchipping in Scotland, along with the introduction of a single, centralised database. Microchipping is already part of the Society’s standard rehoming process for cats, and the charity is working with key stakeholders to push for changes that will improve cat welfare and safety nationwide.
