Scottish SPCA appeals for information after cat found burned on Portobello Beach

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after the burned remains of a small cat were discovered on Portobello Beach in the early hours of the morning on 26th  November 2025.

The disturbing discovery was made around 7am on the morning of Tuesday 26th  November, when a member of the public, who works for the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, found the body of a small cat within the remains of a fire on the beach.

The cat’s body was completely burned and is currently unrecognisable. It is not yet known whether the cat was already deceased before being placed in the fire. The team are attempting to find a microchip to help identify the animal.

A report has been received that two middle-aged men were seen in the area behaving suspiciously around 4.20pm on Monday 25th November, near a bonfire on the beach. The witness did not see the incident take place.

A Scottish SPCA Inspector said: “This is a very upsetting case and we are keen to establish what happened. At this stage we cannot confirm if the cat was dead or alive before being placed in the fire. If anyone was in the area of Portobello Beach on Monday evening or Tuesday morning and saw anything suspicious, or has any information at all that could help, we would urge them to contact our  confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
