We are appealing for information after a Horsefield’s tortoise was found in a cardboard box on top of a bin in Ladybank, Cupar on the morning of 21 October.

We were alerted to the incident after the concerned member of the public who found the tortoise brought the animal to a local veterinary practice.

Scottish SPCA inspector, Robyn Gray, said, “The tortoise was found in a Hello Fresh delivery box with hay on the bottom.

“The box appears in good condition and was dry, suggesting it hadn’t been there long enough to be exposed to the elements for any length of time. It has a Stirling post code on it.

“The tortoise is fairly large in size, so this could be a pet someone has had for quite a few years.

“The reptile has a misaligned beak which they are now receiving veterinary treatment for.

“We appreciate that vet bills can be a worry and the person who left the tortoise may have intended for them to be found, but this is not the right way to give up an animal if you can no longer care for them.

“Thankfully, the tortoise is unharmed and is now at one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres where they will receive the care they need.

“This is a fairly unusual and distinctive animal so we are hopeful that someone might recognise them. If anyone recognises this tortoise, we would ask that they contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
