Abandoned dog in snow

Scottish SPCA issues appeal after dog found tied to a tree in secluded woodland near Mayfield

The four-year-old Belgian Malinois cross, named Demon, was found by a member of the public next to a burnt-out vehicle in Mayfield on Friday February 13.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a dog was found abandoned and tied up to a tree in secluded woodland in Mayfield, near Dalkeith.

The four-year-old Belgian Malinois cross, named Demon, was discovered by a member of the public next to a burnt-out vehicle in the freezing cold on Friday February 13. They walked past the dog that afternoon and returned to check later that day and the dog was still there so they called the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline.

He could have potentially died due to the cold

An Inspector went to the scene and found that Demon was in an extremely secluded area. If the member of the public had not seen the dog he could have potentially died due to the cold temperature. Demon was also very underweight so was taken to the vet before being transported to the Scottish SPCA Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno, Edinburgh. He is continuing to gain weight and has a friendly nature.

Due to Demon being microchipped, the animal welfare charity was able to speak to the previous owner who advised that they had rehomed him in January 2025. The organisation has since tried to engage with the new owner but have been unsuccessful.
