Junior sailors from HMS Ambush, a Royal Navy submarine, attended a volunteering day at the Scottish SPCA Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cardonald, Glasgow, on Tuesday 20 January.
Nine Junior sailors took part in the initiative, which saw the group get involved with cleaning, maintenance and creating a new calming office space for animals in the centre’s care. The group also got to find out more about the work that takes place at the centre, meet some of its furry and non-furry residents and learn about the overarching mission of the Scottish SPCA to make Scotland the best place in the world for an animal to call home.

It is hoped that the sailors will return and volunteer again in future, with Alan Garner, Leading Communications Information Specialist at HMS Ambush, describing it as an “incredible day”.
Something back to the local community
“Everyone enjoyed themselves,” Alan explained. “Our Junior Rates Mess wanted to give something back to the local community, and supporting the Scottish SPCA was the perfect opportunity.
“The Junior Rates worked hard throughout the day, and it was rewarding to know we were making a direct difference to the animals in their care.”

Lesley Morgan, Assistant Manager at the Glasgow centre, said that the group were an “absolute delight” to have.
She said: “The Junior Rates Mess arrived at the centre with outstanding enthusiasm and were an absolute delight to have. They were eager to help with anything and completed tasks we had been hoping to tackle for a long time.
Providing them with a calmer and more comfortable environment
“The new office space they created has already made a huge difference, especially for the more nervous dogs in our care, providing them with a calmer and more comfortable environment.”
