Animal WISE for Secondary

At the Scottish SPCA we believe our support to every school in Scotland should extend further than our FREE annual workshops. We want to support young people’s health and wellbeing, enhance their literacy and numeracy skills, introduce innovative ways to engage with STEM and inspire future career pathways.

In order to meet with restrictions, we have adapted our workshops to an outdoor setting so we can continue to visit and engage with your school without being in the classroom. We will be offering this from October 2021.

We have adapted to virtual classes so schools can still be #AnimalWISE as restrictions ease. Please register your interest below.

Join our Animal WISE e-learning course

By taking part in the Scottish SPCA's virtual Animal WISE world, you and your class will:

  • Work your way through all the interactive learning activities.
  • Show us what you have learnt by taking part in our quizzes.
  • Be crowned a Scottish SPCA Animal Champion!

If you achieve all this, you’ll also be telling the world you are indeed Animal WISE!

FREE interactive workshops

Our 2021 free workshops are available to book. At the Scottish SPCA we aim to prevent cruelty and bring those found guilty of such acts to justice. In our hour-long Animal Advocates workshop, the school grounds become a court room as we use a real life investigation to generate discussion and debate.

To meet with current restrictions, we will deliver our Animal Advocates programme outside in the school grounds. Pupils will take on the important roles involved in an actual Scottish SPCA investigation, explore the evidence and state their case in a ‘court room’.

Outdoor workshops will be rescheduled in the event of adverse weather.

Pupils will get the chance to read evidence, interviews and statements from vets and Scottish SPCA inspectors before taking on characters such as the defendant, the prosecution and the sheriff in a court case role play.

Register your interest for virtual classes or outdoor learning from October 2021.

Animal Ambassadors activity pack

Are you in secondary school, college or university? Are you creative? Do you like sharing your opinion? Do you like to learn new things? If yes, this is for you!

The Scottish SPCA needs to raise public awareness of animal welfare issues to help us protect animals living in Scotland today. Our challenge for you is we want you to imagine you are our newest recruit in the Scottish SPCA's communications team. We need you to decide how you would educate the public about the impact of key issues such as the puppy trade and fireworks on animal welfare in Scotland today.

We have five topics listed in the Animal Ambassadors booklet below. In order to achieve the honour of being one of the Scottish SPCA's Animal Champions we would like you to complete public awareness campaigns for at least three of them and share your creations with us. For each topic you will need to do some project planning, conduct some research and create different texts and infographics to convey the required key messages. Be as creative as you like, we have provided you with some key information to help you get started so please download the booklet and good luck!

If you need help reading any of these documents, you can ask your computer to read them aloud to you. Download Adobe Reader from the App Store or Google. Once installed, open the “View” menu, point to the “Read Out Loud” submenu, and then click the “Activate Read Out Loud” command. You can also hit Ctrl+Shift+Y to activate this feature.
