Five year ban for kennel owner who neglected dogs following Scottish SPCA investigation

A kennel owner has been given a five-year ban on owning and working with animals after neglecting 17 dogs under his care.

Wilfried Vangenechten, owner of Avonbridge Kennels, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court on 18 September. Vangenechten, 60, of Avonbridge Lodge, Old Avon Road in Hamilton, pled guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to 17 dogs under Section 19 (2) (a) (b) of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 Act.

The Scottish SPCA attended Avonbridge Kennels following a complaint received by a member of the public expressing concerns for the welfare of a number of puppies and adult dogs.

Scottish SPCA inspector Heather Lawson said, “We attended the property with a veterinary surgeon and following a thorough examination, 17 dogs were seized on the grounds of unnecessary suffering. They were in need of immediate veterinary attention for a number of skin conditions, dental disease, severe matting and poor body condition.

“A statutory care notice was put in place for the remaining animals and a report was submitted to the procurator fiscal.

“None of the dogs had access to water, a basic requirement, and the living conditions were very poor. The smell emanating from the kennels was overpowering and many of the kennels had little or no bedding.

“The dogs were there for the purpose of breeding, they had a very poor quality of life with hardly and human interaction and socialisation.

Inspector Lawson added, “The unnecessary suffering in this case was entirely avoidable. Despite being offered the Society’s support and the opportunity to address the welfare issues, Vangenechten failed to meet the basic needs for many of the animals under his care.

“The Sheriff had no other choice but to ban him. This means Vangenechten will not be able to own or work with animals and we hope he gives serious thought to his ability to care for animals in the future.”
