Martini and Mojito are young terrapins who measure approximately three inches across their shell. Terrapins are often sold in pet shops as turtles and are about the size of a 50 pence coin, they can have a certain appeal at that size and are often bought and put into small tanks they soon outgrow. Terrapins are not a pet for a novice and should never be bought or sold on impulse. They require a great deal of knowledge and care from their owner along with the correct tank/vivarium set up. Terrapins can live for 30 - 40 years and are therefore a long term commitment for any pet owner. They require access to water for swimming and also dry land or basking rocks under a heat lamp and UV spectrum lighting as they are cold blooded amphibians. Mature terrapins should be fed on a mixed diet of meat and vegetation along with commercially available food and supplements like cuttlefish containing calcium.
