Starving greyhound wins race to recover

Charlie has made a great recovery and is now looking for a new home.

An injured greyhound found starving in a Lanarkshire beauty spot has fought his way back to health with the help of the Scottish SPCA.

We rescued the neglected dog after he was found roaming at Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton before Christmas (10 December).

He has been receiving care and treatment at our Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton, where staff named him Charlie, and he is now ready to go to a loving new home.

Assistant Manager Lorraine Alba said, "Charlie's condition was dreadful when he first arrived in our care and he looked very sad.

"He was extremely thin and covered in painful, untreated sores all over his body.

"However, after a month in our care he has put on 5kg in weight and his injuries have almost completely healed.

"All of this was achieved through basic nutrition and veterinary attention, which is what we'd expect every owner to offer their pet.

"Charlie has a very sweet, gentle nature and he is such a genuine, loving boy. After such a horrible ordeal we really hope someone will come forward and offer Charlie a permanent home where he will receive the care and attention he deserves for the rest of his life."Charlie was suffering from terrible injuries when he arrived in our care.

Unfortunately we have not received any information to be able to trace Charlie's previous owner, but we are keen for anyone who recognises him to get in touch. Causing an animal unnecessary suffering is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone interested in offering Charlie a home is invited to call our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999 or visit him at our Lanarkshire Centre on Bothwell Road, Hamilton.
