The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after an injured greyhound was found starving in a Lanarkshire beauty spot covered in painful sores.
A member of the public found the neglected dog roaming at Chatelherault Country Park, Hamilton, on Saturday (10 December) and took him to a local police station. Police alerted us to the dog's terrible condition.
Named Charlie, the three year old is now receiving care and treatment at our Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton.
Our Centre's Gillian Boyle said, "Charlie arrived with us on Sunday in an awful state.
"He is very underweight and covered in open wounds which have been left untreated for some time. It's likely that he has received these injuries from lying on hard ground.
"Charlie is microchipped to his breeder, but we have been unable to trace his current owner.
"We are very keen to find this person because Charlie should have received better care and veterinary attention before now.
"Thankfully Char
lie is responding very well to treatment and his wounds are already looking much better. He's also gaining weight thanks to a nutritious diet.
"Despite what he's been through, Charlie has a lovely, sweet nature and we are sure he will make someone a fabulous pet."
Causing an animal unnecessary suffering is an offence that carries stiff penalties including up to a maximum of twelve months in prison and a £20,000 fine. Anyone found guilty of doing so can also expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
