Dog stabbed then buried in Inverness

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a dog was stabbed to death and buried in Inverness.

We were alerted to the horrifying scene by police who uncovered the body in the Assynt Road area of Kinmylies on Friday 4 November.

A post-mortem revealed the young male black and white Staffordshire bull terrier cross had been stabbed once in its lung, with a second stab wound to its heart proving fatal.

Two men were witnessed by a member of the public carrying a bag and spade and acting suspiciously in the area on the day the dog's body was discovered.

Both men are described as being between 35 and 45 years old, 5ft 10in and of medium build. One of them was bald and was wearing a blue t-shirt. The other wore a black jacket and had shoulder-length hair tied in a pony tail.

Scottish SPCA Chief Inspector Iain Allan said, "This was an absolutely horrific attack on a young, defenceless animal.

"Police discovered the dog in a shallow grave which was covered by a wooden pallet.

"This was in a small wooded area, close to a residential part of the city.

"If these men hadn't been noticed there is a good chance no one would have ever found this poor dog.

"This is now a joint investigation between the Scottish SPCA and Northern Constabulary Police and we would ask anyone who can help us identify those responsible for this attack to contact us as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is urged to call our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999 or Inverness Police Station on 0845 600 5703.
