The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a dog was abandoned while she was in labour.
We were alerted to the Staffordshire bull terrier by a member of the public on Sunday afternoon (13 November). She had been left at Glaive Road in Knightswood, Glasgow, with two tins of food and a ball.
The dog, who has been named Poppy, gave birth to one pup on the street and had three more when she arrived in our care.
Staff are now looking after mum and her babies and we are keen to identify the owner.
Chief Inspector Hamish Mackintosh said, "This was an extremely cruel act against a very vulnerable dog.
"It was very lucky she was found and thankfully Poppy and all her pups are doing well.
"To abandon any animal is wrong, but this poor girl was in labour and would have been extremely distressed.
"We would ask anyone with information about who dumped Poppy to come forward as soon as possible."
Abandoning an animal is an offence that carries stiff penalties including up to six months in prison and a £5,000 fine. Anyone found guilty of doing so can also expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
Anyone with information relating to this abandonment is being urged to contact our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
