Food donations at thirteen year low

Patrick is currently recovering from his operation.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for animal lovers to hand in tinned meat to its Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre after it reported food donations are at a thirteen year low.

Staff at our centre in Balerno have already cared for over 1,000 animals this year, with almost half of those being cats and dogs.

Patrick the cat, who found with a shattered pelvis and broken jaw after being hit by a car, is just one of the many animals currently being looked after by us. He is now recovering well and healing nicely after his operation.

Centre Manager Diane Stewart is now asking kind people to donate to help the centre cope with the demand. She said, "We're going through a lot of food at the moment as we're caring for such a large number of cats and dogs, and we're very short on tinned meat.

"Food donations from members of the public have really fallen lately. In the thirteen years I've worked here at the centre it's never been this low.

"We are getting by, but we have plenty of tums to feed and when we do receive tinned food, it's used very quickly.

"Fortunately, we do have lots of dried food but we have a particular need for tinned cat and dog meat.

"Any help the public can give us will be greatly appreciated and the animals will certainly be very pleased."

Donations can be handed in to our centre at Balerno daily between 10am and 4pm.
