A Wishaw man has been banned from keeping animals for ten years after he admitted neglecting his elderly dog who was suffering from a chronic skin condition.
Stephen Rowlands, 41, of Woodgreen Court, Wishaw, was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering by failing to provide thirteen-year-old Sabre with the veterinary treatment he needed at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Wednesday (2 November). He was also fined £360.
We investigated Rowlands after receiving a complaint from a member of the public in October 2010.
Sabre, a male crossbreed, was suffering from a severe skin condition and an eye and ear infection that had been left untreated for several months and was causing him a great deal of discomfort and pain.
Inspector Sam MacDonald said, "We are very pleased that Rowlands has been convicted of this offence and banned from keeping animals for ten years.
"Sabre's condition was so advanced when he came into our care that he did not respond to treatment and sadly the only humane option was to end his suffering on veterinary advice.
"Pets rely on their owners entirely for their wellbeing and it is unacceptable for someone to ignore their animal while it suffers in silence. Sabre should have received treatment long before we intervened and the fact that he had to be put to sleep is a tragic outcome."
