The Scottish SPCA has welcomed the three year ban imposed on a man who admitted causing unnecessary suffering to more than 500 chickens and quail.
David Gale, of Ingleston, admitted at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Monday (17 October) that between July 2010 and January 2011 he failed to provide adequate nutrition, a vaccination programme to prevent disease, hygienic living conditions and veterinary care for 491 chickens and 39 quail at Lannhall Poultry Unit at Tynron.
The 41-year-old was banned from keeping chickens and quail for three years and fined £290.![]()
Scottish SPCA Chief Inspector Hamish MacKintosh said, "The conditions we discovered were horrendous.
"Some of the birds had already died and unfortunately others were in such an awful state that they could not be saved and had to be humanely destroyed. This was tragic and entirely avoidable.
"Gale demonstrated a complete disregard for the health and welfare of these birds and it is entirely appropriate that the court has imposed a ban."
