Not content with rescuing animals from danger, Scottish SPCA Chief Inspector John Carle has received a bravery award from the Scottish Government for his part in apprehending an armed robber.

In November 2010 a teenager, armed with a knife and a pick axe handle, attempted to carry out two robberies on local shops in the Aberdeenshire village of New Deer.

He was pursued by John, who is a volunteer Special Constable with Grampian Police, and his colleague into a local pub where, cornered, he lunged forward to attack John with the handle of a pick axe.  Constable Carle managed to deflect the blows with his baton and spray the 18-year-old with CS spray before hand-cuffing him.

Alan Hemsley received 12 months detention in a young offenders institution for a string of offences.

Receiving the award from First Minister Alex Salmond at a ceremony at Edinburgh Castle on Tuesday (4 October) John said, "This was a very proud moment for me, my family and the Special Constabulary.

"I did what any police officer would have done under the circumstances and most importantly, nobody was injured."
