Children find abandoned dog

Larry

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after an elderly dog was left tied up outside a Falkirk vet surgery in a neglected state.

Local children spotted the male brindle lurcher-type dog abandoned outside Ashbank Vet Centre on Sunday afternoon (28 August) and alerted the police who in turn contacted us for help.

The dog, wearing a brown leather collar, was suffering from extensive hair loss and skin thickening which is most likely to have been caused by a heavy flea infestation. He also had overgrown claws.

Senior Inspector John Chisholm collected the poorly dog and took him to our Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre where he is now receiving the care and attention he deserves. He has been named Larry.

SI Chisholm said, "Larry looked a sorry sight when he was discovered by local kids on Sunday afternoon at around 3.30pm.

"His condition isn't due to his advanced years, but very likely that someone has allowed his flea infestation to go untreated for a long time, resulting in the large bald patches on his body and legs.Hair loss on back and legs

"This sort of condition is fairly easily remedied if treated early so it's a shame that he's been allowed to get into such a state.

"The vet who examined him advised that he has been caused unnecessary suffering because his owner has failed to get him the vet treatment he needs.

"We are keen to speak to his owner and would urge anyone who recognises Larry to call our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999."
