Kittens dumped inside bin bag

Two kittens are recovering in Scottish SPCA care after they were cruelly tied up inside a bin bag and left to die in Hawick.

We are now hunting the callous person who dumped the helpless eight week old kittens.

A member of the public found the youngsters at around 7am on Friday (August 26) while walking her dog along an old railway path between Melgund Place and Linden Crescent.

The male and female kittens, who have been named Midnight and Shadow, were taken to a local vet and are now being cared for at our Scottish Borders Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Mellerstain.

Senior Inspector Jenny Scott said, "The lady found the kittens when her dog was drawn towards a garden refuse sack that had been dumped in undergrowth.

"When she opened it she found a plastic bag with the two kittens tied inside.

"If they hadn't been found, the poor things would have starved or suffocated to death.

"They were very hungry when we fed them but remarkably they seem to be making a full recovery.

"Both kittens' white fur is stained yellow so they've obviously come from a very dirty environment. We think it's likely they've been in someone's house as they appear to be litter trained already.

"This was an extremely cruel act and we're keen to identify whoever was responsible. We'd urge anyone who recognises the kittens and knows who might have owned them to get in touch."

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
