The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a swan was cruelly shot with an airgun in Cumbernauld, leaving its partner and seven cygnets pining.
We were alerted when members of the public spotted the male bird struggling on a small island on Broadwood Loch.
Our Inspectors used a rescue boat to reach the swan on Tuesday 16 August.
Ambulance Driver Jennifer Hamilton said, "The swan was bleeding and appeared to have been shot in the side of his head.
"We took him to a vet where an x-ray revealed an airgun pellet lodged in his spine.
"Sadly, due to the severity of his condition, he had to be put to sleep on veterinary advice.
"This was a very cruel act which would have caused the swan a great deal of pain and suffering.
"We think he was shot around Friday 12 August as we had several calls from concerned members of the public.
"Where the swan was on the loch made it difficult to get near but our attempts to rescue him continued over the weekend and we were able to reach him with our rescue boat on Tuesday.
"This is a particularly sad case as the swan's partner and seven cygnets remain on the loch pining."
