Busiest year for seal pups

The Scottish SPCA has experienced its busiest season to date caring for injured and orphaned harbour seal pups.

Our Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fife is currently caring for 14 young harbour seals and one grey seal.

Centre Manager Colin Seddon said, "This has been our busiest year caring for harbour seals.

"Last year we cared for 15 harbour seals and we've already cared for 23 this year.

"Most of the seal pups that come into our centre have been orphaned or injured and are too young to survive by themselves.

"We rehabilitate them at the centre until they are strong enough to be released.

"It's difficult to say why there has been an increase although there are now less organisations in Scotland taking in injured seals.Harbour seal Winkle

"Our new Wildlife Rescue Centre in Clackmannanshire, due to open next year, will have twice as many dry and wet seal pens in addition to three outside pools.

"These new facilities will allow us to care for more than 100 seals a year."

If anyone is concerned that a seal pup is injured or orphaned they should call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999 for advice.
