Horse theft warning

The Scottish SPCA has issued a warning to horse owners following reports of suspected horse thieves operating in areas of Scotland.

Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, "We have recently received calls from horse and pony owners in the Alloa, Biggar and Peebles areas who are worried that their horses may have been targeted by thieves.

"The owners found their horses' manes had been plaited which is often a sign that someone intends to steal them.

"Thieves will plait the manes of the horses they want to steal so when they return with transport their target is easily identified.

"If the horses had been stolen it is likely that they would have been sold on.

"We would urge all horse owners in these areas to be vigilant and look out for any deliberate markings or plaited hair on their horse that they have not done themselves.

"If anyone sees anything suspicious they should report it immediately to the police."
