Cat abandoned in close

Judy was found abandoned in a cardboard box

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after a cat was found abandoned in the close of an Edinburgh block of flats.

The white and tabby semi-long haired female cat was found inside the main door of a block of flats on Lorne Street, Leith, on Sunday afternoon (30 January).

A resident of the building found the cat in a cardboard box along with a plastic bag containing her litter tray and some food.

Inspector Jenni Surgeon said, "Apparently, someone rang all the buzzers for the flats and when some of the residents came downstairs they found the cat inside the main door to the building.

"No-one in the building recognised her.

"She is very overweight and as a result she is matted at her back end as she can't clean herself.

"It is clear that she hasn't been on a suitable diet and hasn't been regularly groomed.

"Whoever dumped her obviously wanted her to be found quickly but that does not excuse the condition she is in and her owner couldn't have been certain that whoever found her would help her."

The cat is now being cared for at our Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre where staff have named her Judy.

Anyone with information about the cat should contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.

Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
