The Scottish SPCA has appealed for information after a canary was found dumped in an ice cream tub.
The bird was found in the close of a block of flats on Hamilton Lane, Bo'ness, at 6pm on 4 January.
A resident of the building discovered the bird when he was taking out his rubbish and picked the tub up to put it in the bin.
The canary was taken to our Wildlife Rescue Centre and is now being cared for at our Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre where it has been named Buzz by staff.
Wildlife Rescue Centre Manager Colin Seddon said, "Luckily the man realised there was something in the box and opened it to discover the bird inside.
"Whoever abandoned the bird had put air holes in the sides and lid of the box.
"However, it was still a very cruel act as the box could have easily been stood on or thrown away with the bird still in it, given its location.
"It is a domestic canary and was a bit thin but is otherwise in good health."
Anyone with information about the canary should contact our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
Abandoning an animal is an offence and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
