The Scottish SPCA and Boxer Welfare Scotland are urgently appealing for a very special home for a rescue dog who has twice fought for her life and survived.
Sophie was severely emaciated and close to death when she was rescued by one of our inspectors last year after a man tried to sell her in a Paisley pub.
The two year old brindle boxer was looked after at our Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre before being transferred into the care of Boxer Welfare Scotland, who nursed her back to full health and found her a new home.
However, tragedy almost struck again when Sophie accidentally swallowed a tube of steroid cream and became extremely ill.
Unfortunately, her new owners had not taken out pet insurance and could not afford the life-saving treatment she required.
Lorraine Cumming, Boxer Welfare Scotland founder and trustee, said, "Sophie's owners contacted us because they were very concerned that they couldn't pay her vet bills.
"They decided they could no longer afford to keep her and she came back into our care three weeks ago to continue her treatment.
"Sophie's calcium levels were extremely high and her kidneys were struggling to cope. She was on a drip constantly, was being given diuretics and her kidneys were flushed through twice a day.
"We were very close to losing her but she proved herself to be a fighter once again and has amazed everyone by making an almost complete recovery.
"Sophie deserves the best life we can give her and hopefully someone will come along who can offer her the security, love and care she needs.
"We hope there will be no lasting effects from the accident but this won't be clear for a while yet."
Anna O'Donnell, Assistant Manager at the Scottish SPCA's Glasgow Centre said, "Thankfully, Boxer Welfare Scotland stepped in to ensure Sophie received the help she needed and we're delighted she's now recovering from what has been yet another very traumatic and frightening ordeal.
"Sophie has been through a lot in her young life and we're desperate to help find her a permanent home with a family who are willing to take on a dog who may require long term medication."
Anyone who is able to offer a good, permanent home to Sophie can contact Boxer Welfare Scotland on 01779 812799 or 01343 813999.
