Life ban for animal neglect

Pup

The Scottish SPCA has welcomed the life ban on keeping animals imposed on a man who neglected his pets in Kilmarnock.

Hugh Crainie, 21, formerly of Loreny Drive, admitted at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court that he allowed four animals to suffer at his home during October 2009.

Upon attending Crainie's former address, our inspectors found a collie cross puppy, an adult spaniel cross, a cockatiel and a budgie in poor condition.

Inspector Arianne Harkness said, "We took the animals to a vet who agreed that they were suffering from a lack of adequate nutrition and veterinary attention. The puppy was in a particularly poor state and was severely emaciated.

"All of the animals were signed over into our care and rehomed."

Further to the life ban imposed, Crainie was also fined £400.

"We are very pleased with this sentence," said Inspector Harkness.

"In cases like this we are always seeking a ban on keeping animals, ideally for life, because the person responsible has demonstrated that they cannot be trusted to provide animals with the care they deserve and are entitled to by law."
