Dogs Die in Hot Cars

The Scottish SPCA has issued an urgent plea to dog owners not to leave their dogs in hot cars after reports of deaths in the Highlands.

The charity is investigating the deaths of two dogs found in a car in Inverness two weeks ago.

With temperatures expected to peak at 26 degrees this week, the animal welfare charity is keen to make people aware of the risks associated with leaving a dog in a hot vehicle for even a short period of time.

Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, "Leaving a dog in a car in hot weather is a very bad idea.

"Many people don't realise just how dangerous an act this is. Last July two Shar Pei dogs were left in the back of a car in full sun while their owner went to the cinema.

"It was clear as soon as we arrived that the animals were in extreme distress. We had to force entry to the car by smashing the back windscreen and we were given a police escort to the nearest vets for emergency treatment.

"Both dogs required rehydration via a drip and the internal body temperature of the female was 41.5°C.

"Luckily the dogs survived, but any longer and I've no doubt they would have over heated and died.  We successfully prosecuted the owner, who was fine £400."

Chief Supt Flynn explained the dangers, "In a vehicle, the heat from the sun is intensified through the glass. The dog will pant to try and cool down, which can lead to severe dehydration and hyperventilation.

"Its body temperature will increase to the point where it is effectively boiled alive from the inside.

"Opening a window a little or leaving a bowl of water is simply not enough. Our advice to people is to leave your dog at home and make adequate arrangements for feeding or exercise needs. It is far kinder than subjecting it to a very uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous, situation.

"Causing an animal unnecessary suffering is an offence, and as such, you can be fined and even banned from owning animals. In court, ignorance is not an acceptable excuse, so we would much rather people are fully aware of the consequences."
