Kakariki found in Brechin

Phoenix

The Scottish SPCA is seeking the owner of a brightly coloured bird found on a Brechin street.

We were contacted by a resident of Wards Road who spotted the kakariki straying on 1 August.

Kakarikis are native to New Zealand and their name means little parrot in Maori.

Now named Phoenix, the green and red bird is being cared for at our Angus, Fife and Tayside Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Petterden in Dundee.

Centre assistant manager Lesley Clark said, "Phoenix is a happy wee bird who enjoys singing to his neighbour Will, a cockatiel.

"There is a distinctive tune he likes to whistle but we'll keep this under wraps as this will help anyone who comes forward prove they are Phoenix's owner.

"We're hoping we'll be able to return him home as there's a good chance he has simply escaped from an open door or window.

"If no one comes forward to claim Phoenix, we'll soon be looking to find him a new place where he can sing away to his heart's content."

Anyone who recognises Phoenix is being encouraged to contact our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
